Encouraging new figures measured through the Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Model (STEAM) show that in 2016, Durham welcomed 19.25 million visitors, up 3% on 2015. Visitors to the county made a total contribution to the economy of £806 million.
The number of people directly employed in tourism in Durham in 2016 was 8,943 up 2% on the previous year. When indirect employment in the tourism supply chain is taken into account, total employment stands at 11,158.
