Into the Light is pleased to announce the appointment of Julia Handelman-Smith as its new Programme Director.

Julia is joining Into the Light, a place-based creative collaboration that will drive long-lasting growth in County Durham by empowering communities, inspiring children and young people, enhancing the skills of the cultural workforce and breaking down barriers to working in the creative industries.

Her role will include leading the strategic direction, management, and successful execution of Into the Light, addressing local challenges through cultural interventions, leveraging assets, working with communities, and enhancing cultural infrastructure.

A former cultural diplomat with the British Council, Julia has led arts and education programmes across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East including a major global programme to commemorate the World War I centenary between 2014-2018.

She is excited to be returning to her roots after having built up a broad portfolio of work with diverse clients, including leading dance companies, social enterprises, and universities.

Julia Handelman-Smith, newly appointed Programme Leader for Into the Light, said: "I am honoured to join Into the Light as the Programme Director. I’m passionate about the area and believe there is a real opportunity to drive a new cultural revolution in County Durham. I look forward to using my experience and passion for collaboration to drive Into the Light’s vision and create long-lasting positive change."

In addition to her professional achievements, she is an accomplished cellist and composer, having studied music at Durham University and is the Founder and Creative Director of ‘Our Symphony,’ a collaborative music programme that encourages communities to express their lived experiences through sound.

Her dedication to mentoring and community engagement is also evident in her roles as a mentor for The Prince’s Trust UK, Trustee for Groundswell Arts, and Chair of New Note Orchestra and Projects.

Into the Light is funded by Durham County Council, the National Lottery through Arts Council England, the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and Durham University.
