Progress and pace continues as we look forward with optimism
As 2025 is now in full swing it feels great to be looking ahead with excitement and optimism.
Last year was a year of pace and progress and it shows no signs of slowing down, with major investment continuing at attractions and accommodation across the county and of course, world class events and festivals.
There has been substantial investment in accommodation including a £1.5m capital expenditure refurbishment project at Radisson Blu, Durham. Following the completion of the remodelled ground floor of the hotel, work has taken place throughout the winter to refurbish the rooms.
2025 will also see the opening of new accommodation at Beamish Museum. Visitors will have the opportunity to stay overnight in Georgian themed rooms.
We are looking forward to a year of celebrations and new beginnings. March will mark the beginning of S&DR200 - a 9-month international festival taking place across County Durham and Tees Valley, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first journey on the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR).
March will also see the announcement of VisitEngland’s Tourism Superstar winner for 2024, which is especially exciting for us as Wendy Wilshere, head of volunteering, casting and engagement at Kynren has made the shortlist of 10 people.
As we look ahead, we are busy creating a calendar of training opportunities, covering a range of subjects including wedding training, social media and bookability.
Product development work continues with a focus on the next phase of Northern Saints Trails project to take it to the next level, in partnership with a new regional strategic group.
In addition, work is also continuing on the Durham City Attraction Investment Prospectus, which will attract investors to broaden Durham City’s portfolio of attractions.
