Specialist markets to launch across County Durham
A series of specialist markets is set to launch across County Durham, thanks to funding from the UK Government through the Shared Prosperity Fund that provides pride in place by investing in communities across the UK. Durham County Council has partnered with social enterprise Baccanalia to organise these bespoke events, bringing an array of unique markets to town centres across the county.
The first event in Aycliffe brought thousands of visitors to the town centre, boosting the local economy, and bringing a sense of pride to the local community. Building on this, the upcoming specialist markets will offer an array of fresh produce, local foods, and exciting treats. These go-to events will bring entertainment and a warm, welcoming atmosphere for communities and visitors alike.
The autumn/winter calendar starts with two farmers’ markets in Consett on Saturday 14th September, and then Chester-le-Street on Saturday 21st September.
Following these, we have a fantastic variety of themed markets across the county:
- Crook Big Local on Friday 4th October, where Crook businesses are invited to set up free stalls and showcase their products.
- Seaham Food & Drink Market on Saturday 12th October, bringing the vibrant flavours of the coast to life.
- Barnard Castle Fun Market on Saturday 19th October, featuring free family entertainment alongside local shopping experiences.
- Bishop Auckland Farmers Market on Sunday 27th October, where local produce will be available in the picturesque Auckland Castle grounds, overlooking the ancient walled garden.
- Stanley Tricks & Treats Market on Thursday 31st October, celebrating all things Halloween alongside delectable produce and tricky treats.
To wrap up the season, on Saturday 14th December for the Spennymoor Christmas Market, there’ll be a winter wonderland filled with local flavours and festive cheer for the whole community.
"Following the success of the first specialist market in Aycliffe, we welcome showcasing the diversity of food offerings and talent across the county. We want to bring communities together with markets such as this and support County Durham’s local producers, artisans, and businesses. These events will drive footfall, boost local economies and showcase the diversity of food offerings and talent in the North East. We eagerly ask everyone to join us in celebrating County Durham as the number one food destination in the UK."
Thomas Wales, Director Baccanalia.
Set to transform town centres and market squares into culinary showcases and Christmas wonderlands, these events will boost local economies offering a platform to champion local produce and foster a sense of unity among residents. With a focus on supporting local businesses and artisans, these events are all about nurturing community spirit and highlighting the best of what County Durham has to offer.
Baccanalia extends its thanks to Durham County Council and UK Government funding for making these specialist markets possible.
